Practical, Performance-Focused Sustainability Solutions
We work closely with architects, builders, and certifiers to deliver Section J assessments that align with your design intent and project goals. Our team simplifies the compliance process by offering clear, technically sound advice and fast, reliable reporting.
Thermal & Service Performance
We assess insulation, thermal bridging, and materials to ensure your building envelope meets NCC standards, and review HVAC, hot water, and mechanical systems for sustainability compliance.
Glazing & Solar Control
We evaluate window performance, shading, and orientation to optimise thermal comfort and reduce energy demand.
Lighting & Power
We assess lighting power densities and control systems to ensure efficient operation and compliance.
Building Compliance Around Sustainable Design
Section J of the National Construction Code (NCC Vol. 1) sets out the minimum energy efficiency and sustainability requirements for all commercial buildings in Australia. It ensures that developments are designed to be environmentally responsible, energy-efficient, and comfortable for occupants. It sets out the prescriptive insulation values and thermal performance requirements needed for a commercial building to comply with the NCC and also offers a straightforward and cost-effective compliance pathway, making it the most widely used method for builders, designers, and developers.
Section J applies to critical aspects of a building’s design, including:
- Insulation – reducing heat transfer through walls, roofs, and floors
- Glazing – improving thermal performance of windows and skylights
- Lighting – ensuring efficiency through design and modern technologies
- Building services – covering HVAC, hot water, and power systems
How is Section J Assessed?
Section J compliance is measured against nine categories outlined in the National Construction Code (NCC Vol. 1). Depending on the type of building—whether new construction, alteration, or extension—its thermal and energy performance is assessed across these categories to ensure it meets the minimum energy efficiency standards
Assessment typically involves:
- Glazing calculator – Evaluates the overall thermal performance of windows and glazed elements, considering glazing type, frame material, orientation, and glass-to-wall/floor ratios.
- Lighting calculator – Measures required and maximum energy usage for rooms, ensuring efficient lighting design that reduces consumption while meeting state and national energy targets.
If any areas fall short of Section J standards, recommendations are provided to bring the building into compliance with the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) provisions.
| Section | Content |
|---|---|
| J1 | Energy efficiency performance requirements |
| J2 | Energy efficiency |
| J3 | Elemental provisions for Class 2 or Class 4 buildings |
| J4 | Building fabric |
| J5 | Building sealing |
| J6 | Air-conditioning and ventilation |
| J7 | Artificial lighting and power |
| J8 | Heated water supply and swimming pool |
| J9 | Energy monitoring and on-site energy sources |
How We Deliver Section J Compliance Reports
Initial Consultation
We start with a consultation to understand your project type, scope, and the relevant NCC 2022 Section J requirements.
Plan Review & Data Collection
Our team reviews your architectural drawings, specifications, and services documentation to assess compliance with Section J provisions.
DTS Assessment & Reporting
Using NCC-approved tools, we evaluate your building’s thermal envelope, glazing, lighting, and services. We then prepare a detailed, council-ready Section J report.
Submission & Support
We assist with submitting your Section J report and provide any required revisions or clarifications to ensure smooth approval.
Have some Questions
What is Section J?
Section J is a part of the National Construction Code (NCC) that outlines the minimum sustainability and energy efficiency requirements for commercial buildings, including insulation, glazing, lighting, and building services.
When is a Section J report required?
A Section J report is required for all new commercial buildings and major renovations to demonstrate compliance with NCC 2022 energy efficiency provisions.
What does a Section J report include?
It includes assessments of the building envelope (walls, roofs, floors), glazing, lighting systems, and mechanical services to ensure they meet the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) provisions of the NCC.
How long does it take to complete a Section J report?
Timelines may vary depending on project complexity and documentation readiness.
Can you assist with revisions or council queries?
Yes! We provide full support during the submission process and can assist with any revisions or clarifications required by certifiers or councils.
Do you coordinate with other consultants?
Absolutely. We work closely with architects, engineers, and project managers to ensure your Section J compliance integrates seamlessly into your overall design and documentation.
