Performance-Based Compliance, Tailored to Your Design
We work closely with architects, builders, and energy consultants to deliver VURB assessments that align with your project’s unique design and performance goals. Our team uses advanced modelling tools to compare your proposed building against a compliant reference building—ensuring your design meets or exceeds energy efficiency benchmarks.
Modelling with Flexibility
We simulate your building’s energy use and compare it to a reference model to demonstrate compliance. VURB allows for innovative materials, layouts, and systems that may not meet DTS but still perform efficiently.
NCC 2022 Alignment
VURB supports performance-based compliance under NCC 2022, enabling more design freedom while meeting energy efficiency objectives through detailed modelling and analysis.
Integrated Reporting
We can combine VURB with NatHERS, Whole of Home, and DTS assessments for a streamlined compliance package.
A Smarter Way to Demonstrate Compliance
VURB (Verification Using a Reference Building) is a compliance pathway under NCC 2022 that compares your proposed design to a standard DTS reference building, ensuring it uses less heating and cooling energy. Unlike the NatHERS or Deemed-to-Satisfy methods, VURB allows greater flexibility by using energy modelling software, giving you freedom in selecting insulation, glazing, and other materials while still meeting performance requirements. At Torple, we help you leverage VURB to streamline approvals, optimise design choices, and reduce construction costs- delivering smarter, future-ready compliance.
Who Benefits from VURB Assessment?
- When raked ceilings, large windows, or unique designs make compliance challenging.
- For alterations and extensions where parts of the existing building are retained.
- To optimise costs by balancing high glazing expenses with insulation or shading trade-offs.
- When adding additional insulation is not feasible and flexibility is required.
- To use realistic modelling outputs for selecting the most efficient energy sources
- To achieve compliance while reducing construction costs compared with NatHERS or DTS methods.
Do I need VURB or NatHERS Rating?
Whenever you are building a new residential dwelling or undertaking a major extension or alteration to your existing house, you’ll have to obtain a building permit from your governing council. In the process, you may come upon some difficulties regarding energy efficiency compliance for your development. Difficulties emerge from the high cost of building insulation and/or glazing to comply with the code. This includes, for instance, installing double or triple-glazed windows or adding insulation to an existing wall.
So how do you overcome this problem? Or, in a better sense, how could you get your building permit while reasonably reducing your construction costs? VURB is a method proposed by NCC Vol 2.0 as a Performance Solution method of compliance that may suit your project condition
How We Deliver VURB Reports

Book a 20-minute call to discuss your project and determine if VURB is the right compliance pathway.
Data Collection & Plan Review
We gather architectural drawings, specifications, and system details to model your proposed design.
VURB Modelling & Reporting
Using accredited software, we simulate both the proposed and reference buildings to assess compliance and prepare a detailed report.
Submission & Support
We assist with submitting your VURB report and provide revisions or clarifications as needed to ensure approval.
Have some Questions
What is a VURB assessment?
VURB (Verification Using a Reference Building) is a performance-based method that compares your design to a compliant reference building to demonstrate energy efficiency.
When should I use VURB instead of DTS?
VURB is ideal when your design doesn’t meet DTS requirements but still performs well offering more flexibility in achieving compliance.
What does a VURB report include?
It includes energy modelling results, comparison with the reference building, and documentation to support NCC 2022 compliance.
How long does it take to complete a VURB report?
Depending on the size of the home and the documentation available, the timeframe will vary. Please reach out to us to talk about your goals and plans.
Can you combine VURB with other assessments?
Yes! We offer integrated services including NatHERS, Whole of Home, and DTS to streamline your compliance process.
