Green Star Rating

Green Star is a nationally recognised sustainability rating system developed by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). It provides an independent benchmark for the sustainable design, construction, and operation of buildings, fitouts, and communities across the country.
Our Approach

Driving Sustainability Through the Green Star Rating System

We partner with design teams, builders, and developers to help projects achieve Green Star certification with confidence. By understanding your project’s goals, design intent, and sustainability aspirations, we ensure every decision contributes to a higher Green Star outcome—without unnecessary complexity or cost. From early design advice to final certification, our team supports smarter, greener, and more efficient project delivery. It provides a framework to assess and improve environmental performance across:

We assess and enhance your project’s performance by optimising energy use, integrating renewables, and improving HVAC and passive design strategies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

We help create healthier, more comfortable spaces through improved ventilation, air quality, daylight access, and low-VOC materials—ensuring occupants benefit from better wellbeing and productivity.

Our team identifies opportunities to reduce potable water use through efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting, stormwater reuse, and sub-metering strategies aligned with Green Star credits.

We guide the selection of sustainable, low-impact materials and promote responsible construction practices—supporting lifecycle assessments (LCAs), recycled content, and reduced construction waste.

We focus on minimising operational and construction emissions, managing refrigerants responsibly, and promoting innovative solutions that push sustainability beyond standard compliance.

Understanding Green Star Rating

Setting the Standard for Sustainable Building Excellence

The Green Star rating scheme assigns ratings from 4 to 6 Stars for major new developments and alteration or extension projects. It evaluates a wide range of sustainability measures—from energy efficiency and building insulation to responsible construction practices. While Green Star certification is voluntary, some councils include it within Consent Conditions. A minimum 4-Star rating requires at least 15 points under the current Green Star rating tool.

What Makes a Green Star Building?

Green Star is a comprehensive sustainability rating tool that evaluates how environmentally responsible and efficient a building is across multiple performance categories.

Under the Green Star – Performance framework, buildings are rated on a scale from 0 to 6 Stars — with 2 Stars representing average practice, 3 Stars good practice, and 6 Stars demonstrating world-leading sustainability outcomes.

Unlike other Green Star tools, a Green Star – Performance rating is temporary and valid for three years, requiring annual submission of energy and water data. This ensures the rating reflects the building’s actual performance and encourages continuous improvement over time.

Nine Key Categories That Define Building Performance

The assessment covers nine key impact categories, providing a holistic measure of how effectively a building operates, manages resources, and contributes to occupant wellbeing

Key Features of Green Star Buildings

Green Star Buildings goes beyond environmental compliance, helping owners and developers future-proof
their assets. By focusing on eight key sustainability areas, it ensures buildings are resilient, adaptable, and
designed to perform for years to come.

Responsible

Recognises activities that ensure the building is designed, procured, built, and handed over in responsible manner.

Healthy

Promotes actions and solutions that improve the physical and mental health of occupants

Resilient

Encourages solutions that address the capacity of the building to bounce back from short-term shocks and long-term stresses.

Positive

Encourages a positive contribution to key environmental issues of carbon, water, and the impact of materials.

Places

Supports the creation of safe, enjoyable, integrated and comfortable places.

People

Encourages solutions that address the social health of the community.

Nature

Encourages active connections between people and nature and rewards creating biodiverse green spaces in cities.

Leadership

Recognises projects that set a strategic direction, build a vision for industry, or enhance the industry's capacity to innovate.

FAQ

Have some Questions

Green Star is a nationally recognised sustainability rating system developed by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). It benchmarks sustainable design, construction, and operation of buildings, fitouts, and communities across Australia.

No, Green Star certification is voluntary. However, some local councils include it as part of planning or consent conditions. Achieving a Green Star rating demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.

A Green Star rating measures how environmentally responsible and efficient a building is across multiple performance categories. Ratings range from 0–6 Stars, with 6 Stars representing world-leading sustainable performance.

The Green Star – Performance tool assesses operational performance for existing buildings. Ratings are temporary, valid for three years, and require annual energy and water reporting to ensure the building continues to operate efficiently.

Buildings earn points across key categories such as energy efficiency, indoor environment quality, water conservation, materials & waste, and emissions & innovation. Accumulating enough points under the current tool determines the overall star rating.

Green Star Buildings go beyond environmental compliance to ensure assets are resilient, adaptable, and high-performing. The tool focuses on eight areas: Responsible, Healthy, Resilient, Positive, Places, People, Nature, and Leadership.

Torple Enviro guides projects through every stage of Green Star certification. Our services include pre-assessment consultations, detailed assessments, implementation support, and assistance with documentation and certification submissions.

Green Star applies to a wide range of projects, including new building developments, major alterations and extensions, planning and council approvals, sustainable design optimisation, and ongoing operational performance improvement.
